The limestone city
Guelph built itself from its own dolomitic limestone: the Basilica, the stone cottages and terraces of the old wards, the 1850s-1880s streetscapes that make the city instantly recognizable. Renovating stone-built homes is its own literacy, and the non-negotiable rule is mortar chemistry: repointing with hard Portland mortar instead of lime-based mix traps moisture and spalls the stone, damage that takes a decade to show and a fortune to undo. The Brooklyn and College Hill Heritage Conservation District adds formal review for exterior work in its boundaries.
Beyond the stone
The Ward's century workers' housing, Exhibition Park's brick, postwar bungalows, and the sprawling South End subdivisions: Guelph renovates across every era. One citywide layer: Guelph is fully groundwater-supplied, so wellhead-protection zones can shape excavation and mechanical decisions on some properties.
