Getting a building permit in Brantford: the Cloudpermit walkthrough

Step 1: Confirm you're actually in Brantford

The City of Brantford and the County of Brant are separate municipalities with separate building departments. Paris, St. George, Burford, Mount Pleasant and Cainsville are County of Brant, with their own permit packages. Your tax bill tells you which system your project lives in.

Step 2: The Cloudpermit application

Brantford's Building Division accepts applications through Cloudpermit (linked from Build Brantford): create an account, start an application against the property address, and attach the drawings package. For a typical renovation that means floor plans of existing and proposed, structural details for any beams or openings, and, for additions, a site plan showing setbacks. Incomplete drawing packages are the #1 cause of slow permits; the review clock only truly starts on a complete application.

Step 3: Review, permit, inspections

The Building Division reviews against the Ontario Building Code, zoning by-laws and other applicable law. Once issued, inspections are booked through the same Cloudpermit file at the required stages (footings, framing, insulation, final, varying by project). By law an inspector must generally attend within two working days of a request.
