Renovations in Ingersoll, the cheese town with century bones

Ingersoll's 19th-century prosperity left a downtown of solid brick and a housing stock worth renovating properly. We cover it from Brantford, 45 minutes east.

What the cheese built

Ingersoll's dairy-era wealth (this is the town that shipped a 7,300-pound cheese to the 1866 New York State Fair) built the brick commercial blocks and century homes around Thames Street, later joined by CAMI-era wartime and postwar housing and the newer Harrisview-area subdivisions on the north end. It's a compact, honest housing stock: century projects downtown, first-renovation projects on the edges.

The local layers

"Small-town century homes like Ingersoll's are my favourite kind of honest: nobody's flipped them into greige boxes yet, and the bones are usually better than the big-city equivalents. The discipline is identical though: contingency named, discoveries in writing, permit on the wall."

Mitch Fraser, owner, Ontario Contracting Co.
